Letter: Bush and Fidel

by Tomas Hachard / -- I am writing to ask you to enlighten me on some things you fail to mention in your articles. Your articles seem to all say how the United States has offered prosperity to the whole world like no other country has before, but you fail to say how. You just assume the reader will take this as fact. I also would like to enlighten you with one fact. Your president, George W. Bush, was in fact only chosen by 25% percent of the population. 50% of the country voted, 50% of those voted for Bush, leaving us with 25%, easily surpassed by the percentage of people who support Fidel Castro.

Sincerely,
Tomas Hachard

Our Response:

Dear Mr. Hachard,

Statistical analysis pretty much shows that prosperity in this country far surpasses anything in the past or present - anywhere in the world. This fact is undisputable.

Remember, the right to property is fundamental to freedom. If we cannot control the results of our labor, we don't control anything. This freedom is what creates prosperity. People aren't fully alive, fully creative, fully productive, unless they are free to dispose of their income and belongings. What they create becomes the wealth of the nation, of the world for that matter, because they sell and trade this production for the goods and services of others.

This is why a socialist society cannot work. The lack of property rights destroys freedom. It also destroys the incentive to create and to produce. Ultimately, the society must wither and grind itself into a poverty ridden hell-hole. No one works hard, because they know that they will not be rewarded for their efforts. It has happened over and over. How many examples have we had of this process in the last century?

Cuba is one example.

As for Fidel, it is easy to get over 90 percent of the vote when you have a gun pointed at the head of the electorate. We live in a Republic. Those who choose to vote do. Hopefully they have bothered to educate themselves on the issues and the candidates. Those that don't vote simply abrogate their responsibility. It is probably best if those who do not care or do not choose to educate themselves on the campaigns do not vote. They will only skew the results in a negative direction.

I think your advocacy of Fidel is not only misguided, but also dangerous. Fidel has murdered and tortured his own people. He has destroyed Cuba's economy just to enrich himself and a few cronies. If free elections were allowed in Cuba, he would be gone in an instant.

Cordially,

W.J. Rayment
