Offbeat Conservative

WJRayment | 05 November, 2005 07:18

Okay, I admit it. Besides being a neo-conservative, a Zionist, a closet Catholic practicing Presbyterianism, I am also a crunchy-conservative. To the horror of some, I compost, walk darn near everywhere (I set foot in a vehicle once a week to visit my parents 68 miles away). I am often seen on a bicycle, and I try to live a healthy lifestyle. And in spite of being a firm capitalist (See my critique of the Communist Manifesto) I am a cheap son-of-a-gun with an uterly modest income.
I have argued for years that I live this way because I am a conservative.  Conservatives believe in saving things that are useful and tossing out the things that don't work.  (When I have a home improvement project to do, I minimize the use of power tools - though I admit to having quite a few.)  I suppose the fundamental basis of my conservative philosophy (which borders on the libertarian) is freedom.  This leaves me open to accept the wastefulness of others but also with the realization that it is the efficient and intelligent that triumph in the end.
