The Presidency and Terror WarW. J. Rayment / -- The attack on the Twin Towers in New York made it abundantly clear that there are people in this world who want to wreak havoc on the American system. Even the most rabidly anti-military candidates for the nomination in the Democratic party advocate continued war against these criminals. What Democrats do not agree with is our strategy for fighting the Terror War. Kerry, Dean, et al, have said that the war with Saddam was unnecessary and that we should work to appease other states that harbor terrorists. They consider war on terror to be a kind of police action. The democrats are singing out with loud voices, "Give Peace a Chance". They are under the misguided impression that the election of a Kerry or Dean is going to make the world a safer place. They seem to think the use of American power is what is provoking the terrorists. So if we would just slack off, the attacks would end. What these people do not seem to understand is that it doesn't matter if Americans collectively crawl into a hole, completely dismantled our military and send half our wealth to the poor countries of the world. The terrorists will still hate us and still attack us. They don't hate us for our wealth or our foreign policy, those are just excuses. They hate us for our way of life and they are determined to stamp it out. They will be satisfied with nothing less than their mastery over us and our enslavement. This is clear by their rhetoric and the lessons of history. One need not search too deeply in the annals of the recently ended last century to find supporting evidence in the conduct of the Bolsheviks, the Nazis, the Khmer Rouge, etc. The fact is, no matter which man is elected president, be he George Bush or any one of the myriad Democratic candidates, there will be a war. War would be forced on a John Kerry by the aggressive moves of our Terrorist enemies. All of Kerry's overtures to terrorist states would gain nothing, not even time. A complete withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan would prompt a rebuilding of the Terrorist machine and move the targets of opportunity of the enemy from the Middle-East to our own shores. Enough terror attacks committed in this country will eventually prompt even a Democratic administration to be more pro-active in its military strategy. Thus war with the states that harbor terrorists is inevitable and will continue until we can destroy these forces which are attempting to subvert civilization. The real question is, do we want to continue with a pro-active policy that carries the war to the enemy? Or do we wish to stumble about for a year or two while our enemy kills our people on our own shores before we return to the same policy taken up against Iraq. For as President Bush has noted, the only way to defeat the Terrorists is to destroy the regimes supporting them. Iraq was one. There are others. So you see, even the Democrats, if brought to power, would be forced to take up where George Bush left off. |
