Tax Rebate Info
WASHINGTON/ Freedom.gov -- Dick Armey released information regarding the tax rebate passed by Congress and signed by the President. It answers all the important questions.
How big are the checks?
Because the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 reduces the lowest tax bracket by 5 percent, taxpayers will receive a 5 percent rebate of last year's taxable income -- up to the maximum amount. The maximum refund amounts are as follows:
$300 for single taxpayers (5 percent x $6,000)
$500 for heads of households (5 percent x $10,000)
$600 for married couples filing jointly (5 percent x $12,000)
In no case will the refund check exceed the actual amount of federal income taxes paid in 2000.
How Many Taxpayers Will Receive Refund Checks?
It is estimated that:
130 million tax returns will be filed this year.
34 million filers will pay no income taxes at all. As a result, no refund check will be issued because there is no income tax liability to refund.
Of the remaining 96 million returns with income tax liability:
79 Million will receive the maximum amount of $300, $500 or $600.
17 million will get a smaller check equal to 5 percent of their taxable income.
When Will the Checks Be Mailed?
Generally, the last two digits of the taxpayer's social security number will determine when the checks are mailed, so a person may get a check at a different time than a neighbor or even other family members.
The mailing date of checks is dependent on the last two digits of the taxpayer's social security number. The following table indicates when the checks are to be sent:
SSN..........Date Of Check
00 – 09 ......July 23
10 – 19 ......July 30
20 – 29 ......August 6
30 – 39 ......August 13
40 – 49 ......August 20
50 – 59 ......August 27
60 – 69 ......September 3
70 – 79 ......September 10
80 – 89 ......September 17
90 – 99 ......September 24
