TANKS, BUT NO TANKS

Harold Witkov / -- My wife and I just returned from a visit with our French cousins. It was great seeing the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre Dame. It was also terrific hooking up with relatives from across the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the recent strain between our two nations, everyone was careful to avoid talking politics.

One day, as we drove down the famous Champs-Elysees, my cousin Joseph told us this was the Avenue for the Bastille Day Parade, the Independence Day march of the military ranks and tanks.

"Our Independence Day parades are just marching bands and fire engines," I responded.

My cousin explained, "Our tanks show the world we are not looking for a fight, but, if attacked, we are ready."

"Our tank parade was in Baghdad this year," I replied.
