Utopia? I Think NotLuke Hodgens / Powerhouse Profits -- In the 1960’s and Early 1970’s, communes popped up all across this wonderful land of ours. At the time they seemed like great ideas. Each member of the community would provide sustenance for the entire group. If Joe needed socks and didn’t have any, Bob would give him one of his. If Bob needed shoes, Joe would give him one of his…from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs. While the idea of communism is a grand one, in practicality it’s poor at best. When man has no initiative or reward for his duty beyond the group needs, man will NOT act above and beyond the minimal action needed. Communism has, and always will fail. Even in the most practical environment, the family, communism just doesn’t work. The system fails to reward innovators; in fact it creates an environment where the least common denominator is praised. But its innovation and reward that has moved civilization forward and created the ability for any man to live a life beyond his wildest dreams. Bill Gates, the richest man on the planet, came from meager means to build himself an empire. If not for capitalism, Gates would still be an unknown fellow from Seattle. Through capitalism, Gates created a fortune to rival that of King Midas, and through this fortune he created the ability to donate billions of dollars to those in need. Had Gates grown up in Cuba, he wouldn’t have grown to be one of the largest philanthropists in the world. Communism doesn’t allow for such innovation. Gates, instead, may have traded a sock to Joe for one of Joe’s shoes. Capitalism gave Gates, his company, his employees and millions of others the ability to prosper. For the most part, communism is dead. There are still a few pockets of red around the globe, but this is quickly changing. China, for example, is opening its borders and trading goods and services in a free, capitalist market. Russia, coming off the best example of failed communism, is in the midst of an economic turnaround…no more bread lines, no more mass starvation. But North Korea, lead by what many believe to be a madman is a holdout…and perhaps the worst example of failing communism the world has known. It’s widely known that the people of North Korea are starving. We here in the capitalist West have no idea how severe the problem is. It was recently reported that the long standing food ration in North Korea has been cut. Yes, they have a daily food ration. In order to keep the starving hard core communist nation from dieing, the government has ordered a 17% cut in rations. Those on the commune now get to eat a ridiculous 8.8 ounces of food per day; that’s less than half the amount of food needed to be healthy. In fact, the average North Korean is about 22 pounds lighter, and 8 inches shorter than the average capitalist South Korean…but at least they each have a sock and maybe a shoe. To each his needs? Some relief from mass starvation was realized back in the 1990’s, however. The communist country got a break when flooding and drought caused the deaths of about 1 million citizens. People of the civilized capitalist world should be outraged. It isn’t the “American colonial empire” that is causing this horror, its communism. It is time for utopian dreamers to wake up and smell the communist coffee. It is the duty of the greatest capitalist nation to ever grace the earth to step in and stop the horrendous murder, shall I say genocide, of 22 million people. Liberate North Korea…From our ability!
