Review: Till We Eat AgainW. J. Rayment / Conservative Bookstore -- Humor is tough to write. You have to strike just the right balance between insult and injury, find the ludicrous in the mundane, extract the surreal from the real and know just when to deliver the punch-line. Judy Gruen shows that she has mastered this marshal art in her book, "Till We Eat Again: Confessions of a Diet Dropout".Taking on the form of a diary, "Till We Eat Again" gets inside the mind of Ms. Gruen as she struggles with all of the common problems of weight loss. She studies the fad diets, managing to find the "lighter" side of protein, carbohydrate and fat-free programs. We follow her travails as she faces health-food fanatics, personal trainers and fitness gurus. "Till We Eat Again" begins with the prospect of a reunion and the inevitable desire to lose 15 pounds. But Judy knows that starvation and fads are not the answer. She must change her life-style if she is not going to be on a see-saw of diet and binge. Judy pokes fun at herself as well as the diet/fitness industry. Yet, as she does so, she manages to impart useful advice and hopeful inspiration. The book ends with the much anticipated 20 year reunion with classmates from college. The climax shows that Ms. Gruen did not lose her sense of humor in the midst of all her efforts. "Till We Eat Again" is a fun book that anyone who has ever contemplated weight loss or a fitness program will find satisfying. No, it is not a Whopper with cheese; but it is a belly full of laughs, common-sense delivered on a silver platter, a hearty meal for the soul. |
